Recently, in McCurtain County, Okla., a County Commissioner and several other elected officials were caught on tape talking about the “good old days.” Commissioner Mark Jennings openly discussed killing reporters and lynching black people. Commissioner Jennings, under pressure from the governor’s office, resigned.

The reality is that this kind of racism and hatred lurks just beneath the surface for many Americans. While most of us were raised to respect each other’s race, religion, and ethnicity, there was always a drunk uncle or an unrepentant bigot in the family who tossed out racist remarks like he was casting a fishing line.
